Health Care Plans As Insurance- How Necessary Are They?

With the high cost of health care insurance, many people begin to wonder if the benefits they derive are worth the cost they pay. Things such as deductibles may make your health care plan less attractive and thus not seem to be worth the price that you pay. Co-pays are another feature of some policies that may decrease their appeal to new subscribers and make them question the feasibility of paying the money for a health insurance plan.

In the past, it was unheard of for anyone to even think of attempting to make it through adulthood without health care insurance, especially if they had children, but today’s costs have reached proportions that make their feasibility questionable. If one has been healthy and not gone to the doctor for more than a physical and possibly a minor infection, it may seem reasonable to that person that costly health care plan is not worth it.

The problem with this line of thinking is that it can change in a matter of seconds with the onset of a serious illness or unexpected accident. The high cost of a hospital stay in today’s economy can wipe out your entire life’s savings and force you into bankruptcy.

How does one make the decision whether a health care plan is right for them? One of the most important factors in that decision is your age. Before children, health care insurance isn’t quite as important, but when you are raising children, you never know what kind of illnesses may afflict them, not to kind the accidents that children just manage to have that causes cuts and broken bones. When you reach your middle 40s, you tend to find yourself with more health issues than you did in your 20s and 30s.Thus, the decision about health care insurance becomes a rather complex one.

Unless you have a substantial size bank account for emergencies, it is not a wise idea to attempt to live without a health care plan even if you’ve never been sick enough to require a doctor. When you consider the fact that a hospital stay of only four or five days can cost you in the thousands, that more than covers the cost of health care insurance premiums. You have to consider not just whether you can afford the premiums but whether you can afford to pay a hospital bill that costs in the thousands.

Choosing an affordable health care plan can be one of the most stressful decisions with which an adult can be faced. On the other hand, failing to have sufficient health care insurance when it is needed can create a financial situation from which there is no return. Is it more important to save the cost of the premiums or to know that you can afford a doctor or hospital stay when it is needed? That is a decision only you can make.

While you must decide for yourself whether health care insurance is a necessary item in your budget, do keep in mind the high cost of chemotherapy and various types of heart surgeries. These alone can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and with a health care plan, you face the option of being denied treatment or have to mortgage your home to pay for it. The right decision for you is the one that you save you from financial hardship.
